Rejection and Criticism in our Business

I’m sure we’ve all been there when you feel like you’re on top of your business. You woke up and went to the gym, you had a healthy breakfast, all your emails are all caught up. Everything is going so well. Then by lunch you get a curveball that just ruins your day. REJECTION and CRITICISM. Two words that can bring on horrible feelings of questioning ourselves, feeling self-doubt, and just downright feelings of being wounded by the judgement of others. It’s been said many times that we cannot control the actions of others, but we can control how it makes us feel. I can tell you it makes me feel awful! I don’t think it’s necessarily bad to feel this way. It means we care. I am a people pleaser. I want everyone to be happy and I want everyone to like me. And I work hard at it. Maybe that’s you too?

Here are a few ways that have helped me overcome those feelings:

  1. Not everyone will like me. And that’s okay. I think we as Realtors and humans, put so much pressure on ourselves to achieve that impossible standard.

  2. Give yourself some time off before you react to the person. This is HUGE for me. After a good nights rest and I’ve given myself time to think about it, I respond in a completely different way. I can show them so grace.

  3. I ask myself if what they’re saying is true about me. If it is, oh boy, it’s a chance for me to accept it and try and do better. If it’s not true, I’m going to ignore it! (see #2!)

  4. Is the naysayer the person we are trying to attract in our business? If not, it’s a waste of our time to try and convince them. Instead we should be focusing on the customers who do get us!

  5. Finally, I surround myself with the people who build me up!
